Greece will sell another slice of OTE next year ‘only if major interest’

25 Aug 2006

The Greek government may sell a further stake in incumbent fixed line operator OTE next year as part of an ongoing wider privatisation strategy, Finance Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis told a local television channel this week. The state currently controls 38.7% of the telco. However, Alogoskoufis added that more OTE shares would be sold ‘only in the event where there is genuine interest’ from a major European telecoms firm. Local news reports said the sale would be between 10% and 15%, adding that Deutsche Telekom, France Télécom and Telefónica have shown interest in acquiring a stake.
