Ericsson to upgrade Airtel mobile network

Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel has awarded Ericsson a three-year contract for the expansion and upgrade of its GSM/GPRS network and managed services. Under the agreement, which is estimated to be worth USD1 billion, Ericsson will manage the design, development and deployment of Airtel’s network, including capacity and coverage, enabling the operator to expand its footprint in rural India. The vendor will also provide new mobile softswitches based on its Media Gateway and MSC Server platforms.
