Regulator may get control of mobile tariffs

23 Aug 2006

An official at Russia’s IT and Communications Ministry says the government is considering proposals to introduce regulation of mobile tariffs. Prime Tass quotes Vitaly Slizen who claims a bill has been drafted which, if passed, would expand the definition of those operators with considerable market power to include the country’s big three cellcos, MTS, Vimpelcom and MegaFon. Currently only the major wireline operators are classed as having ‘considerable’ market share and they have their tariffs regulated by the Federal Service for Communications Oversight. Between them the trio of cellcos claim more than 85% of all Russian mobile subscribers.
