Vivo awards GSM contract to Huawei

Brazilian mobile operator Vivo has selected Huawei of China to help build its GSM network. Under the deal, the Chinese firm will be responsible for helping Vivo migrate customers from CDMA to GSM in the areas of Rio de Janeiro, Espirito Santo, Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Telecompaper writes that in the first phase Huawei will deploy thousands of base stations using its EnerG GSM platform, which will pave the way for the transition to 3G.
