Regulator dismisses government call to delay WiMAX auction

18 Aug 2006

The Brazilian telecoms watchdog Anatel has rejected a call by the communications minister Hélio Costa to postpone the forthcoming auction of 3.5GHz and 10GHz spectrum licences for WiMAX services, due to be awarded on 18 September, according to BNamericas citing financial newspaper Gazeta Mercantil. The regulator did not fully explain its decision, but said the request failed to secure the required three-vote majority from Anatel’s panel. Hélio Costa had requested a delay to allow for some amendments to the auction, such as a request to reserve at least one spectrum allocation for the government’s ‘digital inclusion programme’ and another requiring licence holders to roll out services to small as well as large cities.
