BPL outlines investments

Indian wireless BPL Mobile plans to invest INR1 billion (USD21 million) to ramp up its network infrastructure, launch new value added services, upgrade a call centre and increase its brand visibility in Mumbai. BPL Mobile will install 300 new cell sites, of which 100 will be operational by the end of September.

In January Hutchison Essar Telecom (HET), a partnership between Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd (HTIL) and India’s Essar Group, paid USD1.15 billion for sister companies BPL Mumbai and BPL Cellular, which together constitute the country’s fifth largest GSM provider. At the end of 2005, BPL Mumbai and BPL Cellular claimed 2.81 million customers in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
