NT to roll out GSM network

14 Aug 2006

Nepal Telecom (NT) is rolling out a GSM-1800 mobile network in the capital Kathmandu Valley, in a bid to upgrade the quality of cell phone services, an official at NT said on Friday. Lok Raj Sharma, director of New Service Directorate of NT, told reporters that the company was deploying the network ‘within the next six months’, and was using Chinese equipment supplier Huawei Technologies to carry out the work. Installation of the new system would provide a base for NT to distribute 400,000 additional mobile phone lines in the valley, the majority of which are expected to be pre-paid. NT currently operates mobile services in the capital using two GSM-900 networks, and claims to have around 600,000 subscribers, of which 500,000 are pay-as-you-go users.
