State-owned telco MTNL has tied up deals with broadcasters STAR TV, Prasar Bharati, Zee TV and Sony Entertainment to provide content for its forthcoming pilot IPTV service. According to local news sources, the service will be christened Tri-Band, with trial services scheduled to start in New Delhi and Mumbai within the next month. MTNL is initially targeting 200,000 users, before expanding the service to other regions.
In March MTNL contracted domestic vendor Time Broadband Services (TBS) to develop and install the content delivery systems for its IPTV service. Under the seven-year deal TBS will design and deploy the content delivery network, aggregate and repurpose content, as well as market and promote services; Hewlett Packard will act as systems integrator.
