3G auction in Macau attracts Chinese, Hong Kong operators

At least five companies will bid in a tender for three 3G mobile network operating licences in Macau, according to Chinese press reports. The bidders include Hong Kong-based cellcos SmarTone-Vodafone and Hutchison, and Macau Unicom, the Macau unit of China Unicom. The other two operators to have entered an application are Macau companies Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau and Kong Seng Paging, the newspapers said. According to TeleGeography, Hutchison is likely to bid via its local subsidiary Hutchison Telephone (Macau) which has provided dual-band GSM services in the territory since August 2001. Macau will formally release the names of the applicants on Tuesday and announce the winners on 20 October.
