Spanish 3G start-up Xfera has confirmed that it has contracted Ericsson to supply it with equipment for 450 W-CDMA base station sites. Xfera first struck the deal with Ericsson in October 2000, but its original launch plans were mothballed shortly after. The renewed agreement comes a month after Scandinavian telco TeliaSonera formalised a plan to take over the troubled operator. In its second quarter report TeliaSonera said negotiations were ongoing for contracts regarding the rollout of 1,550 additional sites and other elements of the Xfera network. Xfera hopes to launch commercial 3G services before the end of the year.
