Sky Link plans 3G infrastructure and handset purchases

Russian CDMA operator Sky Link yesterday announced that it planned to purchase CDMA2000 1xEV-DO equipment from US-based vendor Lucent Technologies ahead of a full commercial launch of 3G mobile services in September 2006, reports Cellular News. Sky Link also plans to purchase Kyocera’s EV-DO-enabled mobile handsets, which also support the company’s established platform, CDMA2000 1x 450MHz. Sky Link is the only Russian operator with a 3G test licence, and announced the launch of 1xEV-DO pilot services in Moscow and St Petersburg in the fourth quarter of 2005. The company operates in 20 of its 65 licence regions and had 300,000 subscribers at the end of January.
