H3G plans HSDPA blanket coverage by end-07

26 Jul 2006

UMTS mobile operator Hutchison 3G Austria (H3G) has revealed plans to upgrade its W-CDMA network with HSDPA technology offering coverage of 95% of Austria by the end of 2007. The cellco has sealed a turnkey contract with Siemens comprising the supply of W-CDMA/HSDPA technology and a managed services package. The deal is worth ‘multi-digit millions’ according to the vendor.

H3G launched services under the brand name 3 in Vienna, Linz and Graz in May 2003, and by the end of the year had met the 25% coverage target stipulated by its licence. Nokia was contracted to expand the network in December 2004. It currently provides W-CDMA coverage of 50% of the population and a total 98% when roaming on the 2G networks of rivals.
