MTS suspends i-mode investment, citing lack of handsets

25 Jul 2006

Russia’s largest mobile operator Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) has suspended all investments in i-mode services until September 2006, according to Cellular News quoting a report by business daily Vedomosti. MTS does not plan to undertake any activities linked with the service until September, but will continue supporting the service for existing users, the daily reported. MTS launched a promotional campaign for the service in September 2005 and hoped to sign up more than 150,000 users in the first six months. An MTS spokesperson said that around 100,000 people currently use the service, and that the company’s failure to meet its target was due to a lack of ‘interesting, advanced mobile handsets supporting i-mode.’
