CTU ponders fourth mobile operator

24 Jul 2006

The Czech Telecoms Office (CTU) is considering whether or not to allow a fourth mobile operator to enter the market. The CTU is in a position to licence a set of frequencies for an additional cellco, but whether another operator can succeed in an already highly saturated market is questionable: wireless penetration in the Czech Republic stands at over 100%. ‘We are not sure now whether the set [of frequencies] would enable building a network equal to the existing ones, but this is only a preliminary assessment,’ said Pavel Dvorak, chairman of the CTU. The regulatory body is also contemplating the entry of mobile network virtual operators (MVNOs).
