According to local newspaper Business Times, Malaysian cellco DiGi Telecommunications is prepared to invest as much as MYR500 million (USD137 million) if it is successful in getting a WiMAX licence. Mobile-based WiMAX licences are expected to be issued before the end of 2006, though complete infrastructure rollout could take three years. DiGi is actively pursuing alternative technology platforms as it is the only mobile operator in the country not to own a 3G licence. Rivals Telekom Malaysia and Maxis have both launched 3G services.
