Alcatel takes it EASSy

Alcatel has won a USD205 million tender to lay Africa’s latest submarine cable link, the East Africa Submarine System (EASSy). The 9,900km cable will connect 15 countries, including Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania and Sudan. African telcos say the new cable will help drive down the cost of telephony and internet services for end users by bringing faster and more efficient links to international fibre networks. The Kenyan government had threatened to pull out of the project following a series of delays but all funding is now in place according to Nairobi newspaper The East African Standard.
