Ericsson carries out softswitch upgrade for URS

12 Jul 2006

Ukrainian Radio Systems (URS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Russia’s Vimpelcom, has announced that it will finish its nationwide GSM network modernisation programme and begin using new digital mobile softswitches in the fourth quarter of this year. Swedish vendor Ericsson yesterday completed the installation of five new softswitches in five of the country’s largest cities, allowing for easy migration to 3G technology should URS win a UMTS licence. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database notes that Vimpelcom relaunched URS under its BeeLine brand name on 11 April 2006, and reported that it signed up 100,000 users within the first month. Its newly expanded network covers more than 600 towns and cities; it is aiming for 80% population coverage by the end of 2006, and over five million subscribers by mid-2008.
