Afghani cellco secures USD40 million ADB loan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to loan Afghani wireless operator Telecom Development Company Afghanistan (which operates under the brandname Roshan) with a loan of USD40 million to improve coverage and upgrade parts of the network. Roshan has significantly exceeded subscriber and traffic growth targets, the ADB said in a statement, and will use the funds to accelerate its capital expenditure program to meet strong demand. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database Roshan is owned by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (51%), Monaco Telecom International (35%), MCT (9%) and Alcatel (5%).
