MegaFon hits the million mark in Siberia

Russian cellco MegaFon says its unit in Siberia now has a million subscribers, up 33% since the start of the year. Its subsidiary said in a press release that it has increased the number of base stations in the Siberian Federal District from 500 to 650 over the past six months and plans to increase this to 800 by the end of 2006. MegaFon had 24.23 million subscribers nationwide at the end of March, giving it more than 18% of Russia’s cellular market according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database.
