Reliance allowed GSM and CDMA mobile services within the same circle, papers say

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will allow Reliance Infcomm to launch GSM services in circles where it already provides CDMA cellular services, according to The Financial Express. Operating under the IndiaMobile brand, Reliance offers CDMA services in twenty of India’s telecoms circles, and GSM services in eight circles, mainly in the east of the country. It has applied for permission to roll out GSM networks in seven new circles, including some regions where it already offers CDMA services. ‘We have not yet gone through Reliance’s GSM application, but the DoT’s policy is to accommodate everyone,’ an unnamed, ‘highly placed’ source told the paper. ‘The policy should be dynamic not rigid. We do not want to close the door on anyone. BSNL and MTNL were already offering both the services in the same circles… so why can’t other companies do it?’
