Cote d’Ivoire looks set to get a new GSM operator, with the award of a licence to the Lebanese group Comium Mobile. Comium says it hopes to launch the new network in the second quarter of next year, bringing further competition to a market of 2.3 million subscribers which is currently served by two operators: MTN and Orange. Another firm, Aircomm-CI, was awarded a GSM concession in 2000 but has so far failed to launch a service. Comium has cellular operations in a number of African countries, including Liberia and Sierra Leone.
