Telecom NZ launches Wi-Fi payphones

27 Jun 2006

Telecom NZ has launched a pilot programme using payphones as Wi-Fi hotspots. According to reports in local newspaper Dominion, the trial involves a handful of the incumbent’s 4,600+ payphones, but could be expanded if it proves successful. The phone booths transmit a Wi-Fi signal that can be picked up at a distance of about 50 metres allowing subscribers to Telecom’s Xtra broadband service access to the hotspot free of charge. Non-subscribers are charged NZD10 per hour.
