Malaysian mobile operator Celcom has contracted Alcatel to expand and upgrade
its UMTS network. Alcatel will deliver its Evolium radio access network equipment and digital microwave links to help Celcom expand its W-CDMA network nationwide and offer advanced data services such as mobile TV.
Earlier this month Celcom revealed plans to expand its 3G coverage to all major municipalities within the next month. ‘By the middle of July, all towns and cities nationwide will be able to enjoy our 3G services,’ chief executive officer Datuk Shazalli Ramly told reporters. Celcom recently launched W-CDMA services in Seremban, Ipoh, Alor Star, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, and already has coverage of major locations including the Klang Valley, Penang, Melaka, Johor Bahru, Genting Highlands, and Sungai Petani and Kulim in Kedah. Nokia and Ericsson have also been handed contracts to upgrade Celcom’s network.
