Virgin opens up

South Africa is set to get a new cellular service provider this weekend with the launch of Virgin Mobile. The new firm is a 50-50 joint venture between Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and South Africa’s smallest mobile operator, Cell C, and aims to capture between 200,000 and 300,000 subscribers over the next few months. It is targeting high-usage customers, but says its tariffs will appeal to all users and will be much simpler than packages offered by rival cellcos. Virgin Group has already launched MVNO operations in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and Singapore.
