Two mobile licences to be issued

23 Jun 2006

Jamaica will issue two mobile licences once due diligence reports commissioned by the finance ministry have been completed. One of the concessions is the one returned to the government by Cingular Wireless in 2005. According to technology minister Phillip Paulwell, the licences, in the 1800MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands and worth a combined USD19 million, will go to UK-based Wire9 and a US company, Wiiscom. Whether the two operators go head-to-head with Jamaica’s three established cellcos remains to be seen. Early reports indicate that the proposed licensees are more likely to focus on value-added mobile services.

In separate but related news, market leader Digicel has been granted an additional 6MHz of spectrum to expand and improve existing network capacity and performance.
