Mobile operator Telefónica Móviles España (TME) said it expects that 60% of all Spanish mobile subscribers will own a 3G handset by 2009. TME Chairman Antonio Viana-Baptista told a press conference that his company’s W-CDMA network will have 13,000 base stations and nationwide coverage by that date, compared with its current 6,000.
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, there were 44.33 million mobile subscribers in Spain at the end of March 2006, of which just 3% were 3G users. TME is Spain’s largest wireless operator. It had 20.277 million mobile subscribers at that date, a market share of 46.13%. 360,000 of its customers had 3G handsets.
