Tiscali enters VoIP arena

16 Jun 2006

ISP Tiscali UK is looking to grab a slice of the internet telephony pie with the launch of pre-paid VoIP services under the Netphone banner. Calls are free to other Netphone users and cost GBP0.01 per minute to UK landlines and GBP0.12 to mobiles; calls to Hutchison 3G UK (H3GUK) users cost GBP0.20 per minute. International rates start at GBP0.03 per minute, while SMS and fax services are also available. Netphone is available to non-Tiscali customers with software available from the ISP’s website.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Tiscali UK was launched in July 2001 following the acquisition of three rival ISPs, Liberty Surf, World Online and LineOne, by its Italian parent Tiscali. Tiscali subsequently acquired Tiny Online and Gateway ISP to form the fourth largest ISP in the UK. Tiscali UK ended 2005 with close to a million UK broadband subscribers putting the Italian company’s annual revenues in the UK well ahead of its other European operations at EUR325 million, up 28% on the previous year.
