Riccardo Ruggiero of Telecom Italia has told German business daily Handelsblatt that the Italian telco is actively seeking acquisition opportunities in Germany. ‘We’re examining all market opportunities closely’, he said, before expressing his belief that Germany has great potential for high speed internet services. Handelsblatt quoted an industry analyst as saying that AOL Germany, Versatel Germany and Tiscali Germany could be possible takeover targets.
Telecom Italia’s existing German presence comes via regional carrier and ISP HanseNet. Acquired in 2003, HanseNet offers internet services over a fibre-optic network under the brand name ‘Alice’, and claimed 548,000 users of its internet services at the end of 2005.
