STC awards nationwide 3G contract to Huawei

14 Jun 2006

Chinese technology vendor Huawei Technologies has been awarded a contract by Saudi Telecom Company (STC) to build out its 3G network, launched earlier this month. Under the agreement, Huawei will supply UMTS base stations and a complete core network to help STC deploy 3G services across the Kingdom. STC said that its decision was influenced by the fact that its Huawei-built GSM soft-switch network successfully withstood peak holiday traffic during this year’s Hajj holy season. Dr. Zeyad Thamir Al-Otaibi, Vice President of STC, said that the operator is ‘dedicated to delivering superb 3G services through a reliable 3G network and we chose Huawei because the performance and reliability of Huawei’s 3G solution more than met our requirements.’
