Smartcom to switch to GSM and be known as Claro

13 Jun 2006

According to local newspaper El Mercurio, América Móvil plans to operate Chilean subsidiary Smartcom under the Claro banner. The rebranding is expected to take place by July 2006, by which time the Chilean cellco hopes to have launched a GSM network. Despite having begun deployment of a 1xEV-DO 3G network, Smartcom will be migrating from CDMA to GSM so as to match América Móvil’s other wireless subsidiaries. Siemens is rolling out the new network in a deal worth around USD200 million.
