Low cost mobile IP calls mark France’s changing telecoms landscape

13 Jun 2006

Three of France’s leading broadband service providers, neuf Cegetel, Iliad (Free) and France Télécom (now under the Orange banner), have begun the rollout of services that allow cellular phone customers to use mobile and Wi-Fi networks with the same handset. The deployment of dual-mode Wi-Fi mobile products is making cheap voice calls over the internet a reality in France, and other European countries are now expected to follow suit. Indeed, some analysts forecast that such services could dramatically alter operators’ business models in the coming months/years as they help blur the distinction between fixed and mobile services, which in turn could help compensate for declining revenues from traditional fixed line voice services.
