Egypt’s National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) says nine bids have been pre-qualified for the final round of consideration for the country’s third GSM mobile licence. Incumbent Telecom Egypt, bidding as a joint venture consortium with Telecom Italia, is among the nine to have progressed to the final round of considerations, which will include an auction on 4 July. Other bidders include consortia headed by Etisalat, MTC, Mobile TeleSystems, Turkcell, Telenor, Wataniya Telecom, Qatar Telecom and MTN Group. The regulator said two bids had been disqualified after the technical evaluation. The first was a joint venture between Kuwait’s Emak and India’s Reliance, and the second was a consortium headed by Saudi Telecom and Telekom Malaysia.
