9 Jun 2006

Wasel Telecom, the Afghani arm of Dubai-based Modern Technologies International, has announced that it will award a contract for wireline and wireless CDMA network equipment within the next four weeks, and will roll out services commercially in November. Wasel, which was awarded a unified telecoms licence last month, expects to invest USD25 million in its first three years of operation; the company is reported to be currently in discussions with a number of Korean and American equipment vendors. It aims to have a customer base of 500,000 across seven Afghan states with a combined population of seven million, and also plans to install CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A at some stage in the future.
