The Czech Republic’s smallest mobile operator Vodafone says it ended March with 2.214 million subscribers, having added 73,000 in the first three months of the year. The cellco’s chief executive officer Grahame Maher attributed the gains in part to a promotional campaign which allowed would-be customers to test its services before actually committing to them. In addition, the operator benefited from mobile number portability which allowed 14,000 mobile phone users to switch to Vodafone, while only 7,000 migrated to other service providers.
Vodafone’s growth in the first quarter was twice that recorded by its rivals Eurotel and T-Mobile. Eurotel reported 19,000 net additions to end the period with 4.695 million users while T-Mobile increased its base by 14,000 to 4.648 million. At end-March the three operators registered 11.56 million active SIM cards, a cellular penetration of 113 cards per 100 inhabitants.
