Telecom Italia says it is close to launching a new handset, dubbed Unico, which will work like a cordless phone within the home and then operate like a conventional GSM handset when outside. The first Unico model, the Samsung SGH P200, will be available in July. Unico customers will pay EUR15 a month for free calls from within the home to fixed and mobile numbers, with subscribers also given free GSM calls to two designated fixed lines and one mobile number. The new handsets will also be able to send and receive e-mails. Telecom Italia says handset retailers have placed orders worth EUR400 million for 2.5 million units.
