France Télécom (FT) says it has teamed up with an industry group promoting China’s homespun protocol for 3G mobile services, TD-SCDMA, in a move that expands its activities in the country. The French incumbent’s France Telecom Beijing R&D Company has joined the TD-SCDMA Forum, making it the first foreign telecoms carrier to join the group, as it looks for fresh business opportunities in what is the world’s largest mobile market with more than 416 million subscribers – a figure than is set to rise to 440 million by the end of the year. FT is one of only a handful of foreign telecoms operators to show an interest in TD-SCDMA, visiting Datang Telecom Technology to discuss the standard. Networking equipment maker Agilent Technologies has also signed up to the TD-SCDMA Forum, says the Xinhua news agency, joining foreign equipment manufacturers Siemens and Motorola.
