KDDI to source mobile phones from Matsushita

25 May 2006

Japan’s Matsushita Electric Industrial Company has said it plans to supply mobile phones to local mobile network operator KDDI Corp, adding a second major customer for its domestic handset business. Matsushita, which makes Panasonic branded products, already supplies phones to the country’s largest cellco NTT DoCoMo. KDDI will launch the new Panasonic handsets in Spring 2007, resurrecting a partnership with the vendor that ended in 2002 when Matsushita last supplied it with cellphones. A spokesman for Matsushita added that the firm was also developing new models for Vodafone KK, recently acquired by Softbank, although he gave no further details.
