UPC could go to war over council’s fibre-optic rollout plans

23 May 2006

UPC Netherlands, a unit of Liberty Global, is threatening to take the council of Amsterdam to court if it goes ahead with the rollout of a fibre-optic network before the European Commission completes its investigation into the fibre plans of local authorities. According to Telecompaper, in October 2005 the European Commission announced plans to investigate the issue of local authorities rolling out fibre-optic networks, since such moves contravened EU legislation forbidding government support in such ventures. UPC says, however, that the council of Amsterdam has already begun digging out the network and as asked for clarification as to whether it has notified the European Commission of its progress thus far. If it fails to receive an adequate explanation, UPC plans to take the matter to court.
