23 May 2006

Latvia’s newest cellco, TDC subsidiary Bitë Latvija, is to delay its commercial launch of 3G services from June to September 2006, according to Baltic Business Weekly. Bitë plans to use HSDPA technology to offer mobile internet at speeds of up to 2Mbps, initially in the capital, Riga, before expanding to the rest of the country.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Bitë Latvia won a combined GSM/UMTS licence in March 2005 and launched pre-paid services in eleven towns in September. It plans to roll out its GSM-based network in three stages, starting with coverage of the major cities and the three most heavily used transport routes.
