Vodafone eyeing Russian entry

Reports from Russia are suggesting that UK-based Vodafone may be considering buying into the country’s largest cellular operator, MTS. The local financial newspaper Biznes cites a source from MTS who claims that the cellco’s management has received a letter regarding the possible purchase. Vodafone is thought to be looking to gain a controlling stake in MTS which, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, had almost 45 million subscribers and a 35.1% share of the Russian cellular market at the end of 2005.
