DoCoMo to spend JPY640 billion on 3G to close gap on KDDI

Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo plans to spend JPY640 billion (USD5.6 billion) on its 3G mobile network FOMA by March 2007 – the end of its current fiscal year – according to Nihon Keizai Shimbun, citing the company president Masao Nakamura. The move is designed to help it close the gap on rival KDDI, which is the market leader in terms of 3G subscribers. DoCoMo plans to increase the number of cellsites by 50% to more than 44,000 and is looking for a 150% increase in subscribers to 35 million.
