The Chief Executive of Greek incumbent telecoms operator OTE has this week declared that broadband internet services are ‘the future of the company’. Panagis Vourloumis told an industry conference held by Greek regulator EETT that OTE aims to install 750,000 ADSL ports and sign up 500,000 ADSL users by the end of 2006; it aims to double this figure to a million by end-2007. He added that despite not making any money from broadband operations so far, his company will invest EUR946 million (USD1.2 billion) over the next three years in broadband network infrastructure. OTE had 154,000 ADSL subscribers at end-2005, 124,530 of whom were retail customers. By the end of March 2006 its ADSL-enabled network covered around 80% of the population, up from 67% at end-2004.
