KDDI and Unicom discuss ‘alliance’

5 May 2006

Following reports that Japan’s KDDI and China Unicom were in discussions on a possible equity deal, the South China Morning Post claims a spokesperson from the Japanese company KDDI has revealed that it is actually more interested in working with China Unicom on CDMA roaming and 3G expertise, than in investing in the firm. KDDI is not the only telco to have been attempting to forge closer links with Unicom; South Korea’s SK Telecom and Sprint Nextel of the US have also been named in the media as potential investors. A spokeswoman for China Unicom was quoted by the paper as saying that while foreign investors had always expressed interest in cooperating with the company, no specific plan had been developed.
