Huawei to unbundle 500 exchanges in twelve months for Carphone

5 May 2006

UK fixed line operator Opal Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carphone Warehouse, has contracted China’s Huawei Technologies to install broadband access equipment at 500 BT Group exchanges in the coming twelve months. The vendor is providing its UA5000 multiservice access platform (MSAP), which supports TDM, Gigabit Ethernet and ATM for broadband access and its Quidway 6506R Ethernet switch for aggregation. No value was given for the deal, but Carphone said last year it would spend up to GBP15 million (USD27.5 million) annually to unbundle up to 1,000 exchanges over a three-year period. Carphone offers retail broadband services under the TalkTalk banner.
