Bell Canada revenues up on wireless, broadband growth

Bell Canada has reported revenues of CAD4.7 billion (USD4.25 billion) for the first quarter of 2006, an increase of 2.2% over the same period last year. The company took an CAD88 million charge in the quarter related to employee reductions, real estate consolidation and other items, which resulted in quarterly operating income of USD907 million, down from CAD1.043 billion in the first quarter of 2005. Bell Canada added 71,000 high speed internet subscribers in the period, giving it a total of 2.266 million customers. Performance at the company’s wireless division continues to strengthen as gross additions increased 17% year-on-year and ARPU crept upwards, contributing to double-digit revenue growth at the unit. Mobile turnover grew 12.8% y-o-y to CAD804 million in 1Q06. Bell added 59,000 net new mobile subscribers in the quarter, taking its total to 5.5 million.
