SingTel’s regional mobile subscriber base hits 85-million mark

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) has announced that its aggregate number of mobile subscribers in the Asia-Pacific region has passed 85 million, up from 77.79 million at the end of 2005 and 64.81 million a year ago. On a proportionate basis, the group’s customer base in its seven markets – Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – stood at 33.13 million, up 28% from a year ago. The strongest growth was reported at Bharti and Telkomsel, which reported yearly growth rates of 78% and 51% respectively. The company’s Australian unit SingTel Optus added 189,000 customers in the quarter to lift its base to 6.49 million, while in its domestic market SingTel ended March with 1.66 million users of whom around 130,000 were 3G subscribers.
