Cellcos to stop selling pre-activated mobile SIMs

3 May 2006

India’s mobile operators, under the guise of the Apex Advisory Council for Telecom in India, have reached an agreement to stop selling pre-activated SIM cards in a bid to address security issues concerning unregistered mobile phone use. All service providers will also jointly form a registry which will contain full details of every point of sale, retailer, dealer and distributor in the country in a bid to further tighten existing security standards. The moves follow a government directive in April aimed at addressing security concerns by tightening subscriber identification and verification practices.
