Tricom expands mobile service to 15 new localities

Dominican Republic telecoms provider Tricom has expanded the coverage of its CDMA mobile network to 15 new localities, as part of its DOP1 billion (USD31 million) 2006 investment programme. The expansion covers Salcedo, Villa Vasquez, Guayubin, Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Yamasa, Monte Plata, Bayaguana, Sanchez, Samana, Bayahibe, Los Toros y Los Llanos and Cambita Garabita.

Meanwhile, the country’s regulator Indotel has announced that the telecoms sector now accounts for 8% of the Dominican Republic’s GDP, whilst combined fixed and mobile penetration reached 51% at the end of March 2006.
