Emerging markets need ‘Ultra Ultra’ low cost handsets

28 Apr 2006

The GSM Association says that its Emerging Markets Handset programme has exceeded expectations, with mobile operators in Bangladesh, China, India and Russia so far purchasing over twelve million Ultra Low Cost Handsets (ULCH). To reach an even wider section of low-income users in developing markets, the ULCH’s USD30 price tag is set to drop further, to as low as USD15 in the next few years. The annual gross per capita income in sub-Saharan Africa is USD371, meaning that at current costs, a ULCH purchase represents nearly 10% of average annual income.
