Ukrtelecom’s 3G tender suspended

27 Apr 2006

Ukrainian fixed line operator Ukrtelecom has suspended a tender to supply equipment for a planned 3G mobile network due to amendments to legislation on government purchases, the state-owned telco’s chairman Georgy Dzekon told shareholders yesterday. Ukrtelecom planned to announce the results of the tender on 30 March, but on 17 March the new legislation, covering purchases of companies under state control, took effect, Dzekon said, adding that it is not clear how to act under the amended legislation. Finland’s Nokia, Sweden’s Ericsson, China’s Huawei and ZTE and Siemens of Germany were reported to be among the bidders in the 3G tender.
